Psalm 139:23-24 "Search me thoroughly oh God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."
What a prayer! Can you imagine inviting God to know your thoughts! We know that He already does but that fact that we would invite Him to do it is amazing! It really shows David's heart for God.
A few weeks ago my son Isaac mentioned that he was getting tired of the color of his bedroom. So after some careful planning to get just the right color (keep in mind he's 6 ) ,we prepared for the task of painting. Since he already had a current color and was living in his room, he had posters from the Cars movie, Nascar, sports etc. covering his walls. Not to mention little shelfs, a desk and some other figurines lining his room. I noticed that when we began the job we didn't immediately start painting any available space we could find. No, there was a plan and an order to what we did. We started by taking down the posters, and figurines to prepare the walls for the paint.
And after every wall was stripped bare, I noticed something that was there the whole time, but never saw. Tiny imperfections on the walls. Maybe some places where the previous paint was a little light, or nail holes, or small dents in the wall. It was amazing when I took a step back and it seemed like that was all I could see! It was amazing how until everything was taken down and laid bare that I actually saw the real surface of the walls.
It made me think of the times in my life as a believer where I would put flashy or exciting things out about myself to hide a flaw or imperfection. Maybe a weakness or something that made me feel self conscious. And at times it became a knee jerk reaction. "See a weakness? No problem we can just put a poster over that to compensate!" And instead of going to the Lord with the challenge I was having, I would just speak some Christianese and be able to fool some people into thinking I was super spiritual. The fact is the quicker we realize that we have nothing, know nothing and can do nothing without Him and His grace. The quicker we are making amazing progress! It's His Grace that is so awesome that it's not how good we are, it's how good He is to us! There is such a freedom when you finally get to the end of yourself! These insecurities left unchecked can compound our issues when we are serving in a spotlight type of ministry!
That's why it's vital to address some areas in our life and deal with some things that need dealt with. The Bible talks about judging ourselves, so we won't be judged. Now I'm not saying that I've had major sin issues in my life where I've needed delivered from. I'm talking about laying down the prepared, religious answers we bring to God and people at time to project an image that isn't exactly accurate. :) The bottom line is this, go to God, humble yourself and acknowledge that without Him and all that He is we have nothing! Invite Him to check your motives, the way you dress, the way you talk. EVERYTHING!! , basically get all up in your business! :) And the quicker you take down those posters, and figurines and flashy distractions. And allow Him to see you for who you are, His grace and compassion will begin to fill in those cracks, and touch up that paint. And you'll stand there without insecurity or shame. You can trust Him...
